Funny Video

Lisa made me aware of the video below, which is a comedian doing a little riff on a piece of classical music. I love it because a) it's just funny but also because b) this is one of my favorite pieces of classical music. Honestly, as wimpy and girly as this might sound, something about this piece of music when it's done correctly almost brings me to tears. I think it's just the simplicity of the underlying structure--I don't know, but I think it's absolutely beautiful. Also, because the piece is written in the key of D and because the key of D is second nature to me on the piano* I actually accidentally found myself playing this piece one day on the piano, and I find playing it as satisfying as listening to it.

Anyway, this video turns all of that upside down and really does a number on the piece.

*I wish I could say it's because of years of classical piano training, but the sad truth is that it's because most of the published sheet music for the band Styx was--for whatever reason--written in the key of D, and I cut my teeth as a keyboard player on Styx sheet music. What a loser! I can still play "Babe" from memory, and "Too Much Time on my Hands" and the organ intro to "Blue Collar Man."
