I Must Be Missing Something Here

I need someone to explain this whole line of reasoning to me...

Yesterday I read an article on the New York Daily News website that stated that top Democrats are urging President Obama to place a non-judge on the U.S. Supreme Court to take the place of outgoing judge David Souter. One U.S. Senator, to quote from the article, "agreed that the eight other justices on the bench who were lower court judges were plenty."

I MUST be missing something here. Because it seems to me that a Supreme Court judge should first and foremost BE a judge! Who are these people wanting? A mechanic? A homeless guy? Andrew "Dice" Clay? I would think that the person who is going to be ruling on Constitutional Law should have a background in--wait for it--CONSTITUTIONAL LAW!

Please, someone, explain to me what I'm just not getting, because if this article had appeared in The Onion I would have bought it as a joke. A badly written joke that missed some pretty obvious chances at humor (see Andrew "Dice" Clay comment above), but a joke nonetheless.

All have been lawyers but not all Judges.

There is no requirement in the constitution to be a lawyer. Old joke what do you call 4000 dead lawyers at the bottom of the ocean? A good start.

But let's get serious and pick the justice. It would have to be a protected class. So I am picking a spanish speaking, muli-racial, woman (not really minority so I am changing) transexual, single mom or dad, (confusion here, depends on which way they are "transing") with a wooden leg. It would also have to be a LEU (Large Earth Unit)

This is soooo stupid, lets do it right:

SWEASY FOR SUPREME COURT JUSTICE.

I can see it now on Drudge:

"While wearing his fashionable crash helmet Justice Sweasy rides his ass on school floor while making deposits and not dribbling"

Now that is real justice and would silence the "No justice, No Peace" crowd. I can hear them now:

We's got it easy with Justice Sweasy.

Have great day, Here come Da Judge Here come Da Judge ............
